Here we have Jesus’ final prediction of his death. He tells his disciples that his departure is imminent. He has one final command for them: “Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other. Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.” Jesus is about to show them the ultimate expression of love: He will lay down his life for them. That is the way they are to love one another. If they do this then the world will know that there is something different about them. They will know that they are disciples of Jesus.
I think we do a horrible job as the modern church of living out this command of Jesus. Instead of loving each other by laying our lives down for one another, we act like the rest of the world. Who is a brother and sister in Christ that you have not loved like you should? Ask God to show you who this may be. How can you show them the love that Jesus commands?
