Jesus’ message to the 7 churches in Revelation 2-3 is always a great wake up call. We have a lot to learn from the early church because we mess up in similar ways. In our passage we see Jesus’ message to the church in Laodicea. He tells them that they have become lukewarm in their faith. They have become this way because they are rich and believe that they have everything that they need. Why do they need to rely on Jesus and passionately seek him if they have money? They must repent and remember that their wealth is really nothing but a worldly security that will pass away. Jesus is the true source of life and security; not wealth.
As Americans we may not think of ourselves as wealthy, but compared to the rest of the world even a middle class American is rich. If you make $30,000/a year, you are in the top 1% in the world in wealth. You probably have enough “stuff” to find your security in something other than Jesus. Has your wealth or possessions made you lukewarm? What are you more passionate about? Comfort and security? Or Jesus?
