Psalm 119:9-16

Purity is a word that our Christian culture has taken and used to mean a number of different things. But at the most basic level, purity is being clean. As sinful people, we are an unclean people. In order to stand before a holy God, we must be made pure. The psalmist asks the question, how can a young person stay pure? Then, he immediately answers his own question: by obeying Your Word. During this time, the only way to stay pure in the eyes of the Lord was to obey his commandments. David says that he delights in God’s decrees. God has given us His word that we might meditate on it day and night and study it in order to learn more about Him and who He has created us to be.

When you read the words of the psalmist who is confessing how hard it is for him to stay pure, how does that make you feel about your own journey?

It appears that the intake of scripture and engagement with the scriptures are central to the psalmist’s understanding of purity. Is that practice natural to you? What are ways that it can become natural to you?
